Well done for all your efforts in the exam. please keep in mind that you will expected to present progress with your FM3 portfolio in January (your research and creative projects).

Our study of Japanese film has taken a long time to complete and we still need to prepare fully for the exam. Before the end of the first week of January, please consider a response to the following question: “How important is a broader knowledge of your chosen national cinema in understanding and appreciating the films you have studied for this topic? [35]”.

Please consider the above question in terms of a comparison of Golden Age and New Wave Japanese cinema and the conditions of the films’ production and reception.

AS Film Studies FM1: Exploring Film Form: Analysis of a film extract

AS Film Studies                                                            FM1: Exploring Film Form

Coursework Brief 1: Analysis of a film extract (1500 words)       (30 marks)

Explore how one (or more) of mise-en-scene, performance, cinematography, editing and sound construct meaning and provoke response in a film extract, ideally 3 minutes duration but up to 5 minutes, depending upon complexity.

Method:

  • Choose an extract that enables you to write coherently and copiously about the micro features present in your chosen 3 minutes.
  • Make lots of notes on all the micro features.
  • Select one (or two) micro features in negotiation with your teacher.
  • Get writing. Main body first – worry about introduction and conclusion later.
  • You are encouraged to illustrate your essay – use numbered and referenced film stills to support your arguments.

This coursework assignment is designed to assess the following objective:

AO2:  Apply knowledge and understanding, including some of the common critical approaches that characterise the subject, when exploring and analysing films and when evaluating their own creative projects to show how meanings and responses are generated.

Your completed essay should introduce the setting, plot and sequence of the film and include background research where appropriate.
